Artist Proof
Artist Proof:
A print assigned for the artist's use.
Cibachrome
Cibachrome®:
A registered trademark of Ilford Photo Corp. and, technically, the color print
material used for printing directly from color transparency film. It is also the
process used to produce a Cibachrome® print, which is known for both its archival
qualities (the best of any common color printing material) and its rich, saturated
colors. In simpler, fine art terms, it is a high quality, long lasting, photographic
print produced by the Cibachrome® method. (Now commonly known as "Ilfochrome.")

Giclee
Giclee:
Taken from the French word meaning "to squirt" or "to spray", a
Giclee is a print produced by the use of computer technology and a high-quality,
large-scale, commercial ink-jet printer. The inks used are rapidly "squirted"
or "sprayed" through the micro-jet nozzles of the printer onto
the surface of a substrate. The substrate used for a
Giclee print is often much like the one used for the
original artwork--usually canvas or high-quality paper--thus creating a piece of artwork
amazingly similar to the original. (See "Iris Print.")

Highlight
Highlight:
To paint, usually over an existing image,
with the intent to bring forth or pronounce certain focal points of the image by
providing contrast, texture and dimension.
Iris Print
Iris Print:
An Iris print is produced by the use of computer technology and a high-quality,
large-scale, commercial ink-jet printer (an Iris Printer). The
inks used are rapidly "squirted" or "sprayed" through the micro-jet
nozzles onto the
surface of a substrate. The substrate used for an Iris print is much like the one used for the
original artwork--usually canvas or high-quality paper--thus creating a piece of artwork
amazingly similar to the original. Iris prints are also known as the
"true Giclee print"** for they were the first prints to
be referred to as
"Giclees."

Limited Edition
Limited Edition: A limited set of
identical prints, separated and differentiated by numerical designation, and any
other embellishments such as hand-enhancements or
remarques,
and often personally signed by the artist.
Lithograph
Lithograph:
Although the process of lithography has been around for over 200 years, modern
or "offset" lithographs are produced by a photographic process that transfers an image from metal plates to a
substrate, such as paper or canvas.

Mixed Media
Mixed Media:
A print produced by utilizing two or more printing processes, such as combined Lithography and
Serigraphy
prints (Seri-lithographs).
Open Edition
Open Edition:
A set of identical prints without numerical designation or limitation.
Poster
Poster:
A four-color lithographic print, usually with type on or around the image promoting
the title of the artwork, the artist, the publisher, a show and/or an event.
Pre-Production
Pre-Production: In publishing terms, the initial section or stage of the printing process which
entails producing an initial image or print true to the likeness of the original.
This initial image or print would be the "proof" or "master print" for all other
prints to follow in its likeness.

print assigned for the printer's use.
Production
Production: A section or stage of the printing process which entails the
actual printing of an image, usually in quantities, for commercial or non-commercial use.
Proof

(n) A print normally used for the purpose comparing a media's image quality,
color, contrast, tone, etc., to the original image source.
Proof: (v) To compare a media's image quality, color, contrast, tone, etc., to the original image source.
Publisher
Publisher:
The company that represents an artist and arranges the reproduction, or publication,
of his
artwork.

Publisher Proof:
A print assigned for the publisher's use.
Remarque
Remarque (or Remark):
A small original sketch, drawing or painting on the border or image of a print by the
artist.
Replacement
Value
Replacement Value: The amount it would cost to replace an artwork with the same or
similar image, and of the same or similar substrate, image size, and edition.
Repligraph
Repligraph®:
A
print produced from a photographic slide or negative utilizing several dyed polymer films
fused into a canvas substrate. The process was invented by Tim Siahatgar and is a
registered trademark of CRA Productions.
Secondary Market
Secondary Market:
Generally, a place where previously owned artwork can be sold or bought.
Serigraph
Serigraph:
A print produced by a color stencil printing process in which paint is pushed through a
fine silk or nylon screen onto canvas or fine art paper. (Also known as a "Silk
Screen Print.")
Substrate
Substrate: A surface, material or element that
supports another; foundation.

Under-Paint
Under-Paint: To paint with the intent
to define the shape, color, and intensity (contrast, brightness, and tone) of an
image.
Unique
Unique: To
enhance an image on a print--usually by painting over, or
"high-lighting", the focal points of the image, thus giving the print
"texture", "dimension", and added "distinction".

Wash
Wash:
A mixture of paint, thinned (as with turpentine) or watered-down.
